THE SAND CASTLE

I found you with sand between your toes,
You said why is the water green.
I looked in your eyes ,
And wondered where my youth had gone.

      Tomorrow is a dream,
You live in today, finding pleasure in the world around you.
      The ocean caressing the sand
      And covering your feet.

I think of who you will be when age has come upon you,
You build a sand castle and pretend to be a queen.
All of life is ahead of you ,
Yet you see only what is in your imagination.

The lovers you will have and the heart breaks you will feel.
I know what is in your future but you would never listen
To the words of an old man.
Still wisdom tells me to play with you in the sand.

I know by morning the tide will come
And the castle will wash away.
But you love the life you have
      And I remember mine.

This is your gift to me, to see the sky as blue
      And raindrops as jewels
      You ask, will I marry?
I smile and tell you, you are loved.
