JAZZ DANCER

When you were just a pup
I held you in my arms
Your feet were as big as your snout
      Fur black and soft

      Then you grew
      Stood up to my chin
And ran like a gale wind
55 pounds and trying to lay
      in my lap

      I sat at the computer
      You were at my feet
      Well on my feet
      Keeping me warm

When a stranger came to the door
      You were there
      To protect our home
      You were fierce
A mighty warrior against all foes

      At night while I slept
      You patrolled
      Always on watch
      When someone came close

      You sounded the alarm
      Jumped on the bed
      Your nose next to mine
And barked as loud and strong
      As you could

Then you ran to the window
      On constant watch
      You barked until I came
Once I looked and said it was all right
      You returned to your post

How long has it been now
      I miss your loving gaze
      Your head in my lap
      Your watchful walks
