A MORNING

      The sun began to rise
A new day just about to begin
      For most it was quiet
The silence holding the air still

The grass turning golden in the light
      Safely behind the fence
      We walked along the road
Laughing as the young will do

      A call from behind
      We turned and I left
      Not far did I step
      On the ground without notice

I stood to find, I didn't know what
      Then ran and stopped
      Pointed my rifle
      I can't remember if I aimed

      She fell to the earth
      I looked around
      Blood and flesh
      Was all I saw
