EMPTY STREETS

The night rain dripped off her face
It was hard for her to see as she ran
Fear kept her moving in the darkness
The sky burst open with thunder

With every sound her heart pounded
      Was he behind her
The street solid beneath her feet
Cars speeding by without a care

Still she ran, tears in her eyes
      'No more' she cried
A dream of happiness long forgotten
This would be the last time

Never again will she be the victim
      With each passing street sign
      Her strength returned
      Fear turning to anger

      Looking over her shoulder
      The streets were empty
She stopped and took a breath of life
Softly a voice spoke from the corner

One of concern and a hand reaching out
      Hesitation in her mind
      A pause in her heart
Then she took the hand in hers

A man stood before her with a smile
      Of new and honest love
A love she had not known before
He gently wrapped his arms around her

Forever more he will keep the rain and pain from her
They began to walk as the raindrops stopped
From day to day and into the nights
      Love was theirs to share
