AN OLD FRIEND

I was walking along the river
      Thinking of her long hair
I hadn't see her in many years
      We were never lovers
      But talked of everything

Whenever we met time had no meaning
It was like we never parted company
The only word the told of our separation was hello
She stood by the waterfall waiting
Looking up at the blue sky

I strolled over to her and took her hand
We didn't speak for awhile just sat
      And knew we were together
      It had been many years
Venus was setting with the moon

She spoke gently as she always did
Told me of all the adventures in her life
Of how her child had grown
And how happy she has been
I told her how I had missed her

But I really didn't feel it now
Time was not ours to know
I felt the peace of the water and her heart
Then we reflected on the nature of the universe
How small we are compared to everything

It is this friendship that continues through
Time and distance that nothing can change it
As long as I know she is on this earth I am not alone
The creek bubbles as it passes us by
A continuous flow of life and energy

I look at her face a little older now
It still carries the beauty and joy of youth
We will part soon not knowing when we
      Can share another moment together
I know throughout time she will never really leave me
