LIFE TO COME

He lays on his back watching the clouds
Moving slowing across the blue sky
The dry grass pricking him slightly
The sun making his face a warm red

A time of dreaming in a young boys life
      Everything magical in his imagination
      Thoughts of tomorrow distant
      He lives in today

He thinks himself a man, a knight riding into battle
Righting the wrongs of the world
Dreams of saving the princess distressed
The sun very hot on his muscles not yet developed

A man he will be soon though
To face all the trials the world has to offer
He wonders at his readiness in the face of danger
Will he stand tall and look others in the eye

      There is some doubt
But youth removes it sometimes foolishly
The young are sent to battle
      And to die
