THE REMINDER

What was left when the sun rose
      The morning dew was drying
      The earth rebelled
The clouds had the orange tinge

      A tree had fallen
      Not far away
      The storm had now passed
People now came into the streets

Hail and wind had taken their toll
We are a community of the lost
So much had been taken in night
Yet the sun pain no mind

      I went to a neighbor
I had seen him in passing
      Now we talk like friends
      Of many years

      He even told a joke
      I looked down the road
      Some roofs gone
      Others damaged

I thought why did it take this
      To say good morning
      Is this the repayment
      For the lose of community

A reminder that we are here together
I heard someone say we will rebuild
But will we remember each other
      There is a lesson here

      How much effort is there
      In a greeting
      Still it is forgotten
Even a wave to acknowledge existence

      We met later that day
      Exchanged hand shakes and hugs
      Tears were shed
      Times of complete silence

      Others spoke
      I remained silent
What powers are at work here
What does the human spirit say

      Yes we are individuals
At the same time we are one
      Not just united in disaster
Perhaps we need to be reminded

      Nature has her way
      Of speaking to us
      Sometimes it is subtle
Others it is in rage for ignoring her

Now I will walk down the sidewalk
      I will say hello
Inquire as to the well being
      Neighbor you are I
